  1. Sign up for a Mendeley account.

    1. www.mendeley.com

    2. Click Create a free account

    3. Follow on-screen prompts

  2. Download Mendeley Desktop

If working independently, skip step 3.

  1. Set up your sharing group:

    1. On the left side of the screen, click “Create Group”  

    2. IMPORTANT: This should be a PRIVATE group

    3. Name group

    4. On next screen, invite your collaborators to join this private group

      1. (Note that currently you can only have one private sharing group at at time)

  2. Populate your Mendeley Library  (USE GOOGLE CHROME!)

If working independently, skip step 5.

  1. Put documents you want to share with your professor or work group into the sharing group you set up in step 3.  IMPORTANT: The copy of the document in the sharing group is a separate copy from the one in the All Documents area of Mendeley.  Thus you should put the document in your sharing group before you do any annotations, then make sure that all of your annotations are done on the shared copy.

    1. Drag and drop the document from your library into your group

  2. Highlight and annotate your PDFs

  3. Install Mendeley Cite-O-Matic

    1. In Mendeley Desktop, go to the Tools menu

    2. Select Install MS Word Plugin

  4. Write your paper, using Mendeley Cite-O-Matic to create your in-text citations & bibliography

  5. Upload your finished paper to Mendeley

  6. Be happy!  You are done!



Bonus:  Populate your Mendeley Library with content from the free internet

  1. Install Mendeley Web Importer

    1. www.mendeley.com/import/

    2. Follow on-screen directions for your preferred web browser

  2. Navigate to an article which you would like to include in your bibliography

  3. If a PDF is available, download it and proceed as if you had found it in a library database

  4. If no PDF is available, use the Mendeley Web Importer to extract citation information. If the webpage allows, use copy the full text into MS Word and create a PDF.
